This motor vehicle manufacturing company was founded in 1899, in Paris, by the Renault brothers and already a year later had more than 100 employees. After the conquest of France by Nazi Germany, its plants were put at the disposal of the Wehrmacht. It was administered by Daimler-Benz AG, which was in charge until its plants were almost completely destroyed by British fighter planes between March 1942 and September 1943. The company's founder and owner, Louis Renault, was later arrested and imprisoned for life as he was accused of collaborating with the Germans during the occupation period. Thereafter, the automaker was nationalized (1945). After the war, due to very high demand, Renault began to produce vehicles for almost every market segment. During the 1960s, in the wake of the success of its cars, the most famous of which was the legendary Renault 4, several plants were also opened in Spain. Later many of its models were produced under license in Romania (Renault 12), Brazil and Turkey.
